OUTDOOR BURNING

IN SENSITIVE AREAS

Outdoor burning 100 metres upwind or 50 metres in any other direction from sensitive activities on properties zoned rural is NOT permitted without a resource consent from the regional council, Environment Canterbury (ECAN) (Rule AQL29 Canterbury Natural Resources Regional Plan, Chapter 3: Air Quality also known as the Air Plan).

Sensitive activities include:

  • schools

  • hospitals

  • parks

  • residential areas and

  • any public amenity area or place of public assembly.

If a resource consent were obtained for burning on a property zoned rural near a sensitive area, then any outdoor fire would also have to comply with the fire restrictions of the Selwyn District Council.

In addition, depending on where the fire is to be lit, further fire permits may be required from the Department of Conservation Leaving Ecan's Website or the relevant Rural Fire Authority.
