Selwyn mayor Sam Broughton has established a mayoral relief fund to support families affected by the Knights Road fire near Rolleston on Saturday 23 December.

One family lost their home in the fire, while three other dwellings suffered significant damage, and a number of out buildings were lost.

Mayor Broughton says the incident is a tragedy for the affected families.

"This couldn't have happened at a worse time - coming right before Christmas," he says. "But we've been encouraged by the many offers of help from the community. I think everyone feels for those who have lost so much."

"We want to help the community support those who have been affected, and the best way people can help right now is by cash donations. That's why we have opened a mayoral relief fund, and we encourage anyone who wants to help to make a donation, no matter how big or small."

Mayor Broughton also paid tribute to the firefighters who battled the blaze yesterday.

Donations can be made to the mayoral relief fund now by online banking, or at any bank branch once banks are open again after the holidays.

Bank details for donations are:
