Draft Gambling Venue Policy 2018 – consultation open

Current location in the site

The Council is undertaking consultation on a reviewed draft Gambling Venue Policy.

The policy has been prepared under the Gambling Act 2003 and once adopted will replace the existing Gambling Policy 2015.

The Council’s Gambling Policy sets out if and where non-casino gaming machines, commonly known as ‘pokie machines’, can be located in the district. It also provides restrictions on the number of machines at the venues.

The objectives of the Policy are: to control the growth of gambling in Selwyn district; to prevent and minimise the harm caused by gambling, including problem gambling; and to allow those who wish to participate in responsible class 4 and race and sports betting to do so in the Selwyn district.

The draft policy seeks to strike a balance between community benefit (funding and entertainment) and the harm caused by problem gambling.

The draft policy proposes:

  • a cap of 120 machines
  • limit new venues to a maximum of five machines
  • venues that are operating fewer than five machines to have a maximum of five machines.
