Have fun with KidsFest these school holidays

KidsFest is set to return this July school holidays with bookings now open.

Over 80 events will be held in Selwyn as part of KidsFest between 8 and 22 July.

Children playing"KidsFest has lots of fun events and activities for kids to do in the upcoming winter school holidays," says Selwyn District Council's Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett.

While some activities are now full, there are still lots of free or low-cost activities to choose from to keep the kids entertained over the school holidays when the weather is chilly. Local activities kids can join include:

  • Adam Allsorts Acrobatic, Comedy and Magic Show – Join Mr Allsorts as he clowns around demonstrating crazy stunts, riding tiny bikes, performing wicked circus tricks and more. Suitable for kids aged 3–13 (children under 8 need a caregiver to accompany them). At Lincoln Event Centre from 1–1.45pm on Friday 21 July. Booking required to attend – see dashtickets.co.nz. $5 per child
  • Discomania – a chance for kids to boogie to fun music, join in some games and have a chance to win spot prizes. At Lincoln Event Centre on Thursday 13 July from 6–7.30pm and The Station (Leeston New Life Centre) on Thursday 20 July from 6-7.30pm. Suitable for kids from 3–13. $2 entry, no booking required.
  • Selwyn Kids’ Market – Stalls at this event are sold out which means there will be heaps of great bargains on offer for Selwyn kids! Come along and browse the toys, books, sports gear and more and support our young entrepreneurs. At Lincoln Event Centre from 10am–12pm on Friday 14 July. Free entry.
  • Sessions for kids at Selwyn District Libraries – Places are still available at Explore: K’NEX® sessions where kids can explore the science of engineering in a fun way; Explore: Write! sessions at Darfield and Rolleston, where expedition leader and author James Norcliffe will lead exciting writing workshops; and fun LEGO® exploration outreach sessions at Southbridge and Burnham. Booking is required to attend sessions – see www.selwynlibraries.co.nz for details
  • Moviemania – Join a screening of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs at Lincoln Event Centre from 6–7.30pm on Sunday 16 July, or A Bug’s Life from 6–7.30pm on Friday 21 July at Rolleston Community Centre. Movies are suitable for children aged 4–13 and their families. Entry is $2 per person – booking not required.
  • Rogaine Rampage – Join a fun cross country navigation sport similar to orienteering where you use clues, a map and a GPS unit to visit control points. The sessions run at Rolleston Community Centre on Monday 10 July from 10am–12pm and 1–3pm. Suitable for kids aged 8–13. Booking required to attend – see dashtickets.co.nz. $5 per child.
  • Winter Pool Fest – Fun daily activities take place at Selwyn Aquatic Centre from 1–3pm during the week of Monday 10 to Friday 14 July. Choose from inflatables (Monday), aqua volleyball and obstacle course (Tuesday), paddle boats (Wednesday), giant inflatables and games (Thursday), paddle boats and aqua handball (Friday). $3.20 per child, suitable for children aged 6–13 (with caregiver supervision required for children under 8). Booking not required.
  • Explore the Forest Floor – Explore and discover the fascinating world of New Zealand’s forest floors. Make your own forest and the things that live here. Find the bugs and insects. Crawl through the under forest tunnel. Session held on Thursday 13 July 10am–12.30pm at the Lincoln Event Centre. Free, gold coin donation appreciated. Suitable for all ages.

KidsFest has been running since 1992. Selwyn families can also attend events in Christchurch and Waimakariri.
