Jones Road/Hoskyns Road intersection upgrade

Current location in the site

Installation of traffic lights at the Jones Road/Hoskyns Road intersection.

This project will include linking to the adjacent traffic lights on State Highway 1 and the rail level crossing to improve the overall coordination of traffic movement in the area.

The upgrade work will include traffic light installation, street lighting upgrades, storm water upgrades, footpath installation and road resurfacing. Construction is expected to be completed by 31 May 2018.

Murray Washington, Selwyn District Council’s Asset Manager, says the jointly funded Council/NZTA project will improve a key intersection and provide for much improved traffic management in a rapidly developing area of Rolleston. “Hoskyns Road is increasingly becoming the key strategic link between the Malvern area, State Highway 1 and Rolleston, as well as serving the Jones road Industrial area, Izone industrial Park, and the proposed IPORT industrial park,” he says.

Road closures of Jones Road either side of the intersection, and Hoskyns Road north of the intersection, will be required periodically for the pavement construction to be completed. Detour routes will be available during these times.

Lane shifts and stop/go controls will be used where possible to allow two-way traffic to continue on both Hoskyns Road and Jones Road to minimise disruption to traffic.

After the road resurfacing has been completed, line marking and sweeping of the road and gutters will take place.

The two bus stops on the eastern side of Jones Road may need to be closed at times. Temporary bus stops will be available during these times.

A 30 km/h speed limit will be in place around the work site. Road users are asked to take care when driving through the site, follow on-site signage, and be alert to changes in traffic management.

  • Construction will occur from 7am–6pm, Monday to Sunday and overnight from 6pm–6am, Sunday to Thursday.
  • Works will have no planned impact on power, phone or internet, water or gas services.
  • No-parking cones will be in place. The area is to be kept clear to allow enough space for traffic lanes and the work site.
  • All works are subject to weather and on-site conditions.

Selwyn District Council has contracted Isaac Construction Ltd to carry out the upgrade to the Jones Road/Hoskyns Road intersection. The total project cost, including design, construction and other work, is approximately $1.3 million.
