If you want to spread the cost of your rates across the year, its now easy to set up a direct debit payment online.

This option allows you to pay your rates weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on what you prefer.

Woman with tabletTo set up a direct debit payment you need your property valuation number and bank account number. Your valuation number can be found on a rates invoice (this is posted or emailed to property owners) and you can also find this online at if you enter your address. Then visit and complete the online rates easypay form – it takes less than two minutes to do this.

Once the form is received by Council staff they will process the request and send you a letter or email confirming the amount to be debited weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly and the starting date of payments.

The average household spends around $54 per week on Selwyn District Council rates, which is similar to the amount Canterbury households spend on power or insurance each week. For your rates the Council provides a wide range of services including roads, footpaths, parks, libraries, civil defence and rural fire services, rubbish and recycling, water and wastewater, community halls, swimming pools, local events and lots more.
