Port Hills Fire

Current location in the site

Information about the Port Hills fires which affected parts of the Port Hills in Christchurch city and Selwyn district in February 2017.

Recovery Phase

Recovery teams have been established to lead the Port Hills fire recovery in both Christchurch city and Selwyn district.

The recovery phase will include identifying the resources required for the recovery and working with stakeholders and the affected community to develop a draft recovery plan. The plan will identify issues and opportunities as a consequence of the fire, and will focus on the natural environment, built environment, social and economic recovery. More information will be provided as this work is further developed into an action plan.

In Selwyn, Al Lawn, Helene Faass and Sue Jenkins are coordinating the recovery effort for residents in the Early Valley Road and surrounding areas.

Fire information

The Port Hills fire began on Monday 13 February, and expanded significantly on Wednesday 15 February – eventually extending over an area of 1,645 hectares with a perimeter of 51 kilometres.

A State of Emergency was in place from Wednesday 15 February to Wednesday 1 March. The emergency operations centre at Selwyn District Council was stood down from Friday 10 March, with fire authorities confident the fire was substantially under control. Control of the fire operation reverted to Selwyn District Council and DOC.

Members of the public are reminded that the fire area remains hazardous. People should stay well away from the fire ground, and observe all closures of tracks and access points.

More information on the fires and updates on the recovery programme in Christchurch and Selwyn are available at Christchurch City Council's website.

Open Fire Season

The restricted fire season previously in place in Selwyn was lifted on Thursday 16 March. An Open Fire Season now applies across the district and will remain in place until further notice. For more information on fire restrictions see: http://www.selwyn.govt.nz/services/rural-fire/fire-restrictions. Although recent rain has reduced the fire risk, people are urged to remain cautious about lighting fires in the open.

Providing assistance

If you would like to make a donation to Selwyn families affected by the fire you can do so here: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/porthillsfire2017

Conservation donations

The Port Hills fires have seriously impacted the ecology of the Port Hills. Many members of the public are already offering generous donations to assist with the restoration of these important conservation areas so the Port Hills Fire Restoration Fund has been established. This is a collaborative effort between Christchurch City Council, Selwyn District Council, government agencies, conservation groups, and the public. The initiative will support the recovery efforts on publicly owned conservation land and private land with important ecological values.
