Reduce fire risk on your property with good design
Current location in the site
The Council recently invited property owners in the Port Hills to a meeting looking at reduce the risk of fires affecting this area.
In dry conditions rural, lifestyle and hill property owners across the district can all be affected by fire. There are a range of strategies you can look at to reduce fire risk on your property and home including your choice of plants and landscaping, maintenance of lawns, gardens and paddocks and ensuring emergency services can access your property.
One of the main ways you can reduce the fire risk to your home is to create a safety zone around your home by removing flammable material like woodstacks, long grass, tree branches and rubbish. The autumn/ winter time is a good time to consider making changes around your home in preparation for next summer.
