Summer in Selwyn
Summer has officially arrived and the holidays are just around the corner. Selwyn has a great range of things to do, many of which are free or low cost.
Enjoy the spectacular views of Lake Coleridge on a walk this summer.
Enjoy the outdoors. Selwyn has a great range of walks in spectacular locations like Arthur’s Pass, Lake Coleridge and the Rakaia Gorge. See www.selwyn.govt.nz/walks for information on the different walks available.
Sample our local food and wine. The award winning Selwyn food and wine trail guide covers over 30 wine and food producers in Selwyn district. The trail is self-guided and mapped so you can spend as much time as you want visiting cafes, restaurants and wineries, and can also complete the trail over several visits. Cool off at the pool. Visiting your local pool is a great way to cool off over summer.
The Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston is open from 6am – 9pm Monday – Friday, 8am-8pm Saturday and Sundays. For changes to hours over Christmas and New Year see the article on the opposite page. Entry - $5 adult, $3 child, $4 senior. Family group and multiple trip concessions available.
The Darfield Pool is also open daily from 1 -7pm, and Southbridge Pool is open daily from 2-7pm. Both pools are closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 2 January.
Relax with a good book
Your local library has range of books to suit every reading taste which can be borrowed, mostly for free. Libraries also have magazines, DVDs, jigsaws and e-books for loan. See selwynlibrary.co.nz for opening hours.
Join a club, get fit or make new friends
If you’re looking to join a sports club, get some exercise or find a new hobby, you can use the new online sport and recreation directory to find out what the options are in your area.

Visit a garden or playground
Selwyn has over 180 reserves and playgrounds. If your kids are tired of the local playground there are plenty of other options in Selwyn to try out. Both Parekura and Rolleston Reserves in Rolleston and the new playground off Poulter Road in Lincoln offer a good range of play equipment for younger children and flying foxes.
For older children Westview Park in Darfield has a skatepark, basketball hoops, soccer goals and other play equipment. Osbourne Park off Drain Road in Doyleston has a BMX track and a play area for children.
