Volunteering
Current location in the site
Civil Defence Emergency Management is a 'people' organisation. It is about helping people in times of disaster. As an individual, a family, a community group or residents association you may be the best, and only, source of help to victims of disaster, especially if your community has become isolated.
To enable you to help your community during a disaster Selwyn runs a Civil Defence / Community Volunteer Programme. The programme is open to people from all walks of life, with the only requirement being that they must be over 18 and a responsible individual.
During an emergency or other adverse event there are a number of areas within the community where volunteers are needed. The following lists the areas where volunteers can be of assistance.
- Emergency Welfare Centres - Looking after those who have been displaced from their homes.
- Emergency Response - Being physically fit, or owning a jet boat, four wheel drive, providing on the ground support.
- Emergency Operations Centre - Part of the team responsible for the co - ordination of the response effort.
- Local Community Support - Living in the community available to check on people or collect information about what is happening.
