Dog Attack

A person or the owner of an animal attacked by a dog can assist both themselves and the investigating officer by taking the following action as soon as possible after the incident:
Record:
- the date
- the time
- the exact location of the attack
Note:
- the colour, breed and any distinguishing features of the dog
- if you do not know where the dog lives, either follow the dog, or at least the direction of its departure to help identify where it lives. (When following a dog, move at the dog's pace and keep a reasonable distance at all times).
- obtain the name and address of the dog owner and any witnesses.
- if the owner leaves without supplying their name and address, it is advisable to make a note of their appearance and if applicable their car colour, model and registration number.
- any conversation with the owner or person in charge of the dog.
If medical or veterinary attention is required:
- a report on the injuries from the doctor or vet conducting the treatment is necessary.
- a photograph of any injuries is additional evidence.
The attack should be reported to Council as soon as practical after the incident by phoning on our 24 hour line 347-2800 or Darfield 318-8338.
