Zero Waste Strategy
Current location in the site
The Council has a Solid Waste Management Policy which aims to drastically reduce the amount of solid waste going to landfills.
It does this by providing services and price incentives for residents to reuse, recycle and compost their household and garden waste.
Only the residual waste that has no other use is sent to the landfill. (Selwyn has no landfills but pays by the truckload to send residual waste to the regional landfill at Kate Valley in the Hurunui District.)
The key elements in our zero waste strategy are:
-
a resource recovery park where waste is delivered for recycling and composting or for transfer to the regional landfill at Kate Valley.
-
a three-stream household waste collection system, consisting of:
a) a recycling collection
b) an organic waste composting collection (in townships only) and
c) a residual waste (to landfill) collection.
