There are a number of fire response agencies with the Selwyn District, including the Selwyn District Council Rural Fire units, New Zealand Fire Service Brigades, NZ Defence Force, DOC and Environment Canterbury fire crews.
Of these, the Rural Fire Force Units and New Zealand Fire Service Brigades are staffed entirely by volunteers. These volunteers, when the Siren or pager sound, leave their jobs, family, or beds to help protect the community.
Many brigades receive only a few calls each year, while other brigades are extremely busy, often getting involved in other community work or projects.
