Department of Conservation (DoC) is the fire authority for land owned by the crown, including sometimes the surrounding land within a 1 kilometre radius, depending on the conservation values to be protected. DoC is also the fire authority for parts of Lake Ellesmere and most river beds (except for the lower Waimakariri).
