Environment Canterbury

Environment Canterbury is responsible for the promotion of sustainable management of natural and physical resources, primarily under the Resource Management Act 1991 and the Local Government Act 2002. As a Regional Council they have responsibility for matters which have more than just a local significance. Rules contained in the Clean Air section of the Natural Resource Plan, prohibiting burning in all residential areas.

In rural areas restrictions have been imposed on the type of material that can be burnt and the proximity burning can occur to residential or sensitive areas.

Rules within the Land and Vegetation Regional Management Plan relating to the Hill and High Country restrict the area, vegetation, slope, altitude and proximity to wetlands that can be burnt.

To report or complain about smoke or air pollution phone the ECan pollution hotline on (03) 366 4663. People found not complying with the rules or regulations relating to burning can expect either a warning or fine.
