New Zealand Fire Service is responsible for fires within the urban fire district; the boundary for these urban fire districts are defined and gazetted by the New Zealand Fire Service. The criteria for determining the location of the boundary is calculated based on a hazard analysis which takes into consideration the number of homes, businesses, population, values at risk and distance from other urban areas. Fires outside the urban fire districts are attended by the Fire Service as per a general agreement; this is however at the discretion of the Chief Fire Officer.
