Fire management in the remainder of the district not covered by another fire authority is the responsibility of the Selwyn District Council. For management processes, the Selwyn rural fire area is divided into the following four main zones:
- Plains,
- Hill and High Country (which has a year round restricted fire season),
- Port Hills
When conditions warrant, Council can implement restrictions on burning in the open air. These restrictions are implemented in the interest of community safety, and give a measure of control over the type of material that may be burnt, and how that burning is to conducted.
