Environment Canterbury under the Air Plan - Chapter 3 - Air Quality section, has introduced rules which prohibit :

- Burning in the outdoors within residential areas

- Burning within 100m of a residential areas or sensitive activity 

- Burning of materials other than the following :

             - Vegetation
             - Crop Residue
             - Paper
             - Cardboard
             - Untreated Wood

Obtaining a Resource Consent to burn in Residential areas

Dispensation to the Environmental Canterbury Air Plan - Chapter 3 - Air Quality Rule AQL29 which bans all outdoor burning in Residential zoned areas or close to sensitive activities can be obtained through the Resource Consent process. To obtain a Resource Consent from Environment Canterbury Phone (03) 371 7155.

Note Selwyn District Residential zoned areas are defined as Living zones in the Selwyn District Plan.
