Selwyn District is criss-crossed by four state highways and thousands of local roads and streets. Except for the state highways, Selwyn District Council is responsible for all public roads, bridges and footpaths in the district.

In total, we manage 1,332 kilometres of sealed road, 1,127 kilometres of unsealed road and 128 bridges. Our responsibilities include:

• maintaining and upgrading road and footpath surfaces

• intersection design and improvement

• signage

• street lighting

• kerb and channel works

• road safety education and design

• road stoppages and closures

• strategic management and planning of transport routes (e.g. CRETS, the Christchurch Rolleston & Environs Transport Study)

• speed limits

• stock control bylaw

• RailTrail bylaw

• walking and cycling strategy

• Selwyn Heels and Wheels Community Fund for projects promoting safe and sustainable transport
