Otahuna Lodge

Built in 1895 for Canterbury pioneer Sir Heaton Rhodes, Otahuna is considered one of the best examples of Queen Anne architecture in Australasia and is protected by a Category One listing from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The Lodge is an exclusive retreat offering seven individual suites. The 2 master suites and 5 suites retain grand architectural features from the 19th century such as ornate wood-burning fireplaces, carved inglenooks and stained glass windows.

Food and wine are an integral part of the Lodge experience. The menu celebrates the best of fresh New Zealand produce with an emphasis on seasonal estate-grown offerings from the Lodge’s own organic kitchen gardens. Honest, uncluttered flavours, the finest ingredients and elegantly restrained presentation are the hallmarks of the Otahuna table.

The spectacular 125-year old gardens stretch over 30 acres. Wide vistas contrast beautifully with intimate walks which wind through wooded glades. On the far side of the lake, hundreds of thousands of daffodils welcome guests to the property each spring. Meanwhile the formal “Dutch” garden invites guests to meander its hedged pathways to discover exotic trees, including some of New Zealand’s largest and finest specimens.

What Makes us different

Set in pastoral surroundings against the fluted cone of an ancient volcano, Otahuna Lodge is a beguiling Victorian mansion that offers its guests a unique sense of wonder and discovery. New Zealand's largest private historic residence has been revitalised with luxury accommodation, glorious gardens and sophisticated cuisine. In its patrician sense of calm, the grace and charm of its grounds and its refined yet personable service, Otahuna combines the romance of the past with the cosmopolitan pleasures of the present - the very best of both worlds.
