Eco–Sourcing Native Plants
Eco-sourced plants are plants grown from seeds collected from naturally occurring plant communities in your local area. Just because a plant is native doesn’t necessarily mean it should naturally grow in your area.
When you are planting eco-sourced plants, it is important you make sure you talk to your nurseries about where the seed source was collected. Reputable nurseries should have good records of where seeds were collected and plants should be labelled.
This is not always easy for nurseries because within Selwyn as in some cases we do have a limited source of seeds for some plants. It may mean that you have to visit several nurseries but all efforts to utilise appropriate eco-sourced plants add towards restoring biodiversity and will often lead to greater plant survival and growth rates.
Below is a not-exhaustive list of nurseries that eco-source plants in the Selwyn District.
There are a growing number of nurseries who are growing eco-sourced seeds so please check the phone book for other nurseries in your area that can help to find the right plants for you.
