Christchurch Little River Rail Trail

The Christchurch to Little River Rail Trail is a 42km cycle route developed by the Christchurch Little River Rail Trail Trust. As each section was completed it was handed over to the relevant authority to maintain: Department of Conservation, Selwyn District Council, Environment Canterbury and Christchurch City Council. The trail begins at Hornby with a sealed route through Prebbleton to Lincoln. From Lincoln the route has a range of surfaces and passes beside picturesque crees and rivers to the old railway station at Motukarara. The route from Motukara to Little River is mainly along the old railway embankment and passes beside Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora) and Lake Forsyth (te roto o wairewa) with their abundant bird life and spectacular views.
