Stay bright, use your lights!

Current location in the site

Winter can bring snow, ice, fog, rain and less daylight.

In these conditions you need to ensure you switch your lights on to make sure you’re visible.

The Road Code says that you must use your vehicle headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise and at any other time you can’t clearly see a person or vehicle 100 metres away.

“Most times it is very obvious when you need your lights on, but outside the guidelines given in the road code, there are a number of other circumstances where using your lights will improve your visibility and make it safer for you and other road users,” says Ngaire Tinning, Selwyn District Council’s Road Safety Coordinator.

“When there is fog, it is raining or where there is the potential for sunstrike, it can be more difficult to see other vehicles. Using your lights on dip is the best way to ensure you are seen,” Mrs Tinning says.

Many people drive with their park lights on but these are only designed for use when a vehicle is stationary and are not clearly visible from a distance.

Increasing following distances and taking more care to check ahead before passing in these conditions is also essential as if other cars do not have their lights on they can be hard to see. Using your lights will greatly increase your chances of seeing and being seen by other vehicles.
