The six-month trial of Lava and Lime e-scooters is set to begin on Thursday 12 December after the Selwyn District Council voted to adopt a reviewed Traffic and Parking Bylaw.

The Council voted in October to allow the trial of 250 e-scooters once the necessary changes had been made to the bylaw, making it legal for the e-scooters to use and park on Selwyn streets.

The trial makes Selwyn the first place outside of a major urban centre to trial the use of commercial e-scooters.

Under the conditions of the trial licence the e-scooters will be allowed to operate in Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton, and to travel between the towns using cycle lanes.

Reduced speed areas will be in place for Council reserves, and in the vicinity of halls and community centres and e-scooters will not be allowed in Council cemeteries.

The companies are required to provide daily reports to the Council on e-scooter travel and safety, and also provide data on any incidents and investigations into their e-scooter operations over all of New Zealand, along with any corrective actions taken.
