Mayor elected to lead South Island and Canterbury forums
Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton will be taking on leading roles for the South Island.
Sam has been elected by his fellow mayors as chair of the Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) Zone Five group—representing the 18 councils covering the upper half of the South Island from Tasman to Waimate. He has also been elected as chair of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum comprising Mayors from the 10 territorial authorities in Canterbury and Environment Canterbury.
Both groups meet to work together on issues that affect the whole region and along with chairing meetings and leading discussions the roles involve supporting the 10 new mayors among the group.
Sam has also been successful in gaining a seat on the LGNZ National Council, which sets the strategy and focus of local government and has an advocacy role to central government.
“I’m grateful for the recognition of my peers. These opportunities lift the profile of Selwyn, the needs of our community, and give Selwyn a voice on the national stage. I love Canterbury and the South Island and am incredibly proud of our land and people and look forward to what we can achieve together” he says.
