Selwyn residents have been giving generously to help Tairawhiti Gisborne as it begins its recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle.

Councillors, staff and Civil Defence volunteers were at Selwyn Sounds on the weekend collecting for the Give for Gisborne campaign, encouraging Selwyn residents to support the Tairāwhiti Mayoral Relief Fund.

Gisborne was among the regions hit hardest by Cyclone Gabrielle, with thousands of houses silt damaged an ongoing water crisis and roads needing rebuilding, and suffered further flooding last week.

Councillor Phil Dean, who coordinated the collection at Selwyn Sounds, said people had been extremely generous in their donations. "People donated around $5000 in cash and we had another around 300 people take down the details to donate later. We had Councillors, staff and volunteers from the Civil Defence Selwyn Response Team who came out to collect, so it was a great
team effort."
