Want to vote? Check you're enrolled
Local elections are coming up in October and the deadline for checking you’re enrolled to vote is coming up soon.
Selwyn residents 18 or older and who are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident are eligible to vote, if they are enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll.
But you need to make sure your enrolments details are correct by Friday 12 August.
Everyone on the electoral roll should have received an enrolment pack from the Electoral Commission last month. If your details were correct – then you don’t need to do anything.
If you haven't received an enrolment update pack in the mail by now it may mean you’re not enrolled, or your details are not up to date. This could be because you’ve recently moved into the district, changed addresses, or have turned 18 – and you’ll need to update your details. To enrol or update your details, visit vote.nz or call 0800 36 76 56.
You can also check a copy of the preliminary electoral roll at the Council offices or any Selwyn library, as well as the Arthur’s Pass Store, Dunsandel Store, or Tai Tapu Store.
If you miss the 12 August deadline, but you‘re eligible to vote, you can still vote but you’ll have to request special voting papers from the Council’s electoral officer.
If you own property in Selwyn district but live in another district you may be able to enrol as a nonresident ratepayer elector and vote in both areas.
Check your eligibility and get more information at the Ratepayer Elector Enrolment Portal on the Council’s website at selwyn.govt.nz/elections.
Selwyn deputy electoral officer Stephen Hill is encouraging residents to check their enrolment early and make sure they have everything in order to be able to vote.
“Councils get to make decisions that affect every Selwyn resident, and have a big impact on the community – including the services that residents receive and what they cost,” he says.
“Local elections are your chance to have a say and help shape Selwyn’s future.”
