The Council provides a flexible kerbside collection service allowing our residents to select the combination of bins or bags that best suit your household and property. Over 90% of the district has direct access to a kerbside service. For those who are not on the kerbside collection route, you can take your bins, bags or crates to your nearest drop-off point.
Recycling is collected fortnightly from 240 litre yellow top wheelie bins, or two 60 litre black crates for those properties that are not on the collection route, and is taken by the collection contractor directly to EcoCentral in Christchurch for sorting, processing and sale. The yearly recycling charge is compulsory for households on the collection route.
Rubbish is collected weekly from either 240 litre or 80 litre red top wheelie bins and transported by our collection contractor to the Pines Resource Recovery Park for compaction, transfer and disposal at the Kate Valley Regional Landfill. You can also opt to purchase official Selwyn District Council rubbish bags from any Council Service Centre and selected supermarkets. The price of these bags includes the cost of collection.
Organic (food and garden) waste is collected weekly from 240 litre lime green lid wheelie bins and is transported by our collection contractor to the Pines Resource Recovery Park where the material is then composted. This service is only available in larger townships at present and is progressively being extended to smaller townships as demand dictates.
Our collection charges are set to encourage waste minimisation and provide a financial incentive to households to reduce the amount of rubbish generated.
