The water meter and backflow prevention device must be installed BEFORE any water is drawn from the supply point. All new connections to a main require our approval and a stand over by our contractor SICON Ltd.

IZone specific requirements for new connections

The infrastructure in place

  • A 50mm diameter water lateral has been installed to the boundary of all Izone properties with a 50mm diameter valve contained in a small valve box.
  • No meter, toby box or backflow prevention device has been  supplied yet.

New connection for potable water supply purpose

To complete the installation of a new water connection, property owners are required to:

A high risk backflow prevention device is required

  • A RPZ device must be installed just inside the boundary of the property nearest the point of supply to protect the public potable water supply network from contamination.
  • It is the cost of the property owner to supply and install a high risk RPZ device to protect the public network from contamination. The cost of installation will depend on the diameter of the water main required within the site.
  • All new backflow devices installed in the new development will be owned by the property owner and maintained under the building compliance schedule in addition to any other onsite backflow prevention device deemed necessary by the building department.

A new water meter is required

  • A water meter must be installed either by the property owner or by the your contractor Sicon Ltd (at stand over of the new connection) in the Council berm side of the property boundary to enable access to it for reading and maintenance at any given time.
  • This should not be installed within the same housing box as the backflow device.
  • Plantings must be kept clear a minimum of 0.5 metres from the meter.
  • Selwyn District Council will own the water meter once it has been installed.
  • It is the cost of the property owner to supply and install the new meter and the responsibility of the applicant/property owner to advise Council of the new meter serial number, installation date & start reading. We will then maintain this new asset.
  • This information should be provided to us using the appropriate As-Builts submission form  [PDF, 149 KB] after stand over of the new connection.
  • Note that water in Rolleston is metered and billed on a six monthly basis.

New connection for firefighting purpose only

  • A RPZ device must be installed just inside the boundary of the property nearest the point of supply to protect the public potable water supply network from contamination.
  • There is no need to install a water meter for this specific type of connection.
