Woman in front of shrubbery

Kumusta! That’s how you say hello in the Philippines. Marivic (Becky) Buada was born and raised in a small mining community north of the country’s capital Manila.

She has moved around a lot, from her hometown to Manila, Manila to Australia and then finally over to Aotearoa New Zealand. But it’s something she is used to. Her father was a mining engineer which meant they moved a lot.

Despite these changes, Becky has never felt homesick or alone. Her move to the capital was supported by friends already there, and her journey to Australia comforted by her sister being at the arrival gates.

After the birth of her baby boy, Becky and her husband decided to move to Selwyn so their son could grow up surrounded by a circle of family. She loves the peaceful nature of Rolleston.

Becky is one of the women behind the charitable trust established for the Filipino community. She organises events and get-togethers with people from Rolleston and beyond.
