Where parking safety is compromised, or when we receive a complaint, parking infringements are being issued. This started on 19 September 2022.
Before this time, the Council followed an educational approach. When a breach was identified, no infringements were issued, only warning notices.
However, with increasing numbers of complaints and the district’s growth, there is a need to start issuing infringements for offences when parking safety is compromised or is inconsiderate to other road users.
We will be issuing parking infringements for parking safety offences on public roads and spaces, such as parking on yellow lines and footpaths, and across driveways. We can also issue parking infringements in relation to a vehicle’s expired registration or Warrant of Fitness, or if there is no current vehicle licence label displayed.
Parking in the Selwyn District is free, although some spaces have time restrictions in place in townships where parking is in high demand. These restrictions are in place from 8 am - 6 pm Monday to Saturday, excluding statutory holidays and Sundays.
