What records the council has varies per cemetery

The Council maintains records on those interred within its cemeteries. Records vary from cemetery to cemetery – most dating from the late 1870s. Originally kept in register books, they were transferred to a card system, and subsequently a computerized database. Since 2006, the Council uses a new cemetery program, and is now progressively putting its cemetery records online.

This will be a real asset to those researching their family history. Please contact the Council for further information. Other valuable sources of genealogical information are held at Christchurch City Libraries, Archives New Zealand, Canterbury Museum and Births Deaths and Marriages. The various historical societies in the district are also great sources of information.
