From Aspiration to Direction

What is Future Selwyn?

Future Selwyn is a long-term, future-focused strategy that holds the key to shaping the strategic direction for our communities over the next 50 years. It aims to enhance wellbeing, sustainability, and the overall appeal of our district as a great place to live, work and play.

As part of the Greater Christchurch Partnership (GCP), Selwyn District Council collaborates on the Greater Christchurch Spatial Plan, a blueprint that guides how future population and business growth will be supported in the wider Greater Christchurch area. This plan emphasises targeted intensification in central areas and along public transport corridors, ensuring a well-planned and sustainable approach to urban development and expansion.

However, Future Selwyn goes beyond this, offering more detailed insights and a broader focus specifically tailored to the unique characteristics of the Selwyn district.

Outcomes and Directions

Future Selwyn will not only define a vision for the Selwyn district but also establish a strategic framework consisting of outcomes and directions, encompassing topics including:

  • Ngā Kaupapa – the district’s cultural values
  • Natural Environment
  • People, Communities and Identity
  • Homes and Places
  • Economy and Jobs
  • Access and Mobility

Future Selwyn will include a vision and framework. This will play a pivotal role in shaping the preferred direction for growth, development, and investment by Council in the areas and towns within our district.

It will also be shown as a District Picture, highlighting how the vision and framework translates across the district.

These will be implemented through our strategic plans, ensuring a cohesive and forward-thinking approach to the future of Selwyn. More work needs to be done through the ‘sub-strategic’ work to translate this into area plans and other action plans.
