Information about current and previous district plans

A district plan is a 10-year ‘rule book’ that sets out what activities are allowed on land (permitted activities) and what activities a resource consent is needed for. It impacts almost everything in our district.

In addition to regulating what can or can’t be done a property, the district plan also controls the negative effects activities could have on neighbours, and vice versa. For example, the district plan can decide how much noise can be made, or how close a house can be built next to the property boundary. The district plan also protects the uniqueness of the district, for example, by looking after cultural and historic heritage, and natural environment and biodiversity.

Councils are required to prepare a district plan under the Reource Management Act 1991 (RMA). The district plan includes objectives, policies and rules that manage the adverse effects of activities on the environment with a focus on land use and subdivision activties.
