These are the contact details for the ratepayer (individual or business) and may be different to the property details this invoice applies to.

Valuation Number
This number is unique to your property so please make sure you use this number when making online payments or contacting us.

Property Information
This is the address you are paying the rates for.

Rateable Land Value and Rateable Capital Value
These valuations are revised every three years. The current valuations are effective from 1 September 2024. The next revaluation will need to be complete and in place by 1 September 2027. More information can be found on our website.

Installment due dates
Rates are payable by four quarterly installments during the financial year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June.
The payment dates for each installment are shown below. The ‘Due Date’ is the last day before a 5% additional charge is added.

Total Due
Rates are payable by four quarterly installments during the financial year, which runs from 1 July to 30 June. The total in the Total Due box, is the amount you have left to pay for the current quarter.
The total next to "Total to clear account for the year" is the remaining balance to be paid over the course of the year. It includes the amounts remaining across all quarters.

Direct Debits
This is the amount that will be deducted for you current direct debit. It also outlines any changes in your future direct debit payments.

Balance and Payments

Annual Rates
The amount due for the financial year, broken down between district rates (Selwyn District Council) and regional rates (Environment Canterbury) and the total.

Opening balance (incl. penalties)
This will show the balance on your account at 1 July (the start of the rating year). This will include any credits or arrears from previous years.

Current year’s rates
These are the rates that have already been applied for the year. They will show on your bill as the combined total of each quarter that has been applied.

For the first installment of the year (issued in September) this will be zero.

Current year’s penalties
A 5% penalty is applied to any amount outstanding from the previous installment.

Adjustments
This will show any changes to your rates such as bin changes or any remissions.

Payments received
Any payments you have already made this financial year.

Total amount to pay
This is the total amount due for the current quarter.

Rates descriptions

This is where you’ll find a breakdown for each individual rate you pay to Selwyn District Council, for example if you are on the urban collection route. More information about each of these rates can be found on the back of your invoice or on our website.
Please note – a uniform charge is the name for a charge that is the same for all ratepayers.

Factor and Rate

The factor column shows what the charge is based on. For example it could be your capital value (for your general rate), or it could be a charge per property.

The Rate column shows the amount charged per unit.

The Amount column shows what you pay. This is equal to the ‘unit’ multiplied by the ‘rate’.
