Funding Waste Minimisation

The Canterbury Waste Joint Committee (CWJC) is responsible for advancing regional solid waste and hazardous waste minimisation in Canterbury.
The Canterbury Joint Waste Committee is made up of the following nine Canterbury Councils
- Ashburton District Council
- Selwyn District Council
- Christchurch City Council
- Timaru District Council
- Hurunui District Council
- Waimakariri District Council
- Kaikoura District Council
- Waimate District Council
- MacKenzie District Council
Previous projects that received funding have included:

| Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery – Climate Action Campus | This initiative diverts clean batts offcuts and construction waste to community groups and the public, using a staffed collection site at the Climate Action Campus to reduce landfill waste and emissions. | 2024 | $5,000 |
| Halswell Menzshed Trust - Timber Diversion | Collection of timber, including pallets and packaging, for reuse in community projects | 2024 | $5,000 |
| Digital Future Aotearoa - Laptop Repair Workshops | Diversion of laptops from waste, refurbishing them for young people in need, teaching repair skills, and promoting e-waste reduction, sustainable consumption and digital equity | 2024 | $20,000 |
| Waste-Ed with Kate - Waste Free Period Programme | This programme educates students and staff of 22 secondary schools in Canterbury on reusable product options and provides free reusable products for participants to encourage long-term waste reduction habits. | 2024 | $30,000 |
| Without Waste Ltd - Rewashable serviceware systems establishment | This project trials reusable cup systems at events to reduce packaging waste and bin misuse and contamination. | 2024 | $14,000 |
Each council contributes levy funds towards a combined waste minimisation funding pool. The committee invites applications for funding for projects making advances in waste minimisation for the region.
