Lincoln Primary School Wriggles into the World of Worms!
October 2024
ReDiscover has been proudly supporting the passionate Enviro Kids at Lincoln Primary as they establish four new worm farms in their school garden. Their school-wide commitment to tackling food waste is inspiring, and their enthusiasm is nothing short of contagious!
Georgie Willets, the Enviro Lead, and David Boustead, the School Garden Educator, reached out to ReDiscover for guidance in launching the worm farms. We were thrilled to collaborate, and excitedly established a plan of attack including where to find resources such as food buckets and bedding.
The first challenge was to get the teaching staff on board. Fortunately, the school's openness to new environmental projects made this an easy win. Equipped with a worm farm full of squiggly residents and a strategic plan, Georgie and Elizabeth (ReDiscover Educator) introduced the concept of "Worm Wednesdays." Each week, the Enviro Kids would visit classrooms post-lunch to collect food scraps, ensuring the worm farms didn’t get overwhelmed. Following the Enviro Kids lead, Elizabeth would also be helping to conduct education across the whole school.
Before we could kick off the educational sessions, the worm farms had to be built. During a lunchtime session, the Enviro Kids transformed into worm farm experts, learning hands-on how to assemble the farms, care for their new inhabitants, and appreciate the wonders of vermicast and worm leachate. Elizabeth, alongside Shara (the wonderful teaching assistant and Enviro Kids helper), answered questions, encouraged teamwork, and got their hands dirty. By the end, the worms had found their cozy new home.
The following Monday marked the beginning of the school-wide education program. Armed with colourful posters and props, the Enviro Kids led classroom visits over three days, covering 22 rooms in total. They passionately shared the importance of worms, how to care for them, and what food they thrive on. It was amazing to see them take ownership, confidently teaching their peers with the knowledge they'd gained the week prior.
A few weeks in, the worm farms are thriving, though not without a few challenges. The students have adapted brilliantly—Worm Wednesdays have shifted to Worm Thursdays to accommodate lunchtime overlaps, and the Year 7/8 students now manage a bokashi bin to help regulate the food waste load. There's even a plan in place to tackle food scraps from the staff room.
Lincoln Primary School has accomplished incredible work this term, and ReDiscover is excited to continue supporting them on this journey—though honestly, with the Enviro Kids leading the charge, they hardly need much help at all!
