What is changing with dog tags?
Selwyn District Council is introducing a new recyclable plastic dog tag to replace the current metal tags over time.

When will the new tags be introduced?
The new tags will begin rolling out from 13 July

Why are you changing from metal to plastic tags?
Community feedback showed that metal tags could wear over time, making them harder to read. The new plastic tags are more durable, easier to read, and fully recyclable.

Do I need to replace my current metal tag?
No. There is no requirement to replace your existing metal tag if it is still in good condition.

Are my existing metal tags still valid?
Yes. All current metal tags remain valid.

When will I receive the new tag?
You will receive a new plastic tag when you register a new dog.

How long is the recyclable dog strip tag expected to last?
They are expected to last for at least five years.

What happens if my metal tag is worn or unreadable?
If your tag becomes worn or unreadable, you should request a replacement to ensure your dog can be easily identified.

Will I be charged for a replacement tag?
Yes, standard replacement fees will apply if a tag needs to be replaced due to being lost or owner wanting to swap out tag. However, if your dog's tag is damaged or broken, there will be no replacement fee providing proof of damage.

How do I request a replacement tag?
You can request a replacement tag by completing the form online. If you have any questions, please contact the Selwyn District Council’s Animal Control Admin team or through the Council’s website.

How much does a replacement tag cost?
Replacement tag fees are $5.14 which are set in the Council’s fees and charges schedule. Please check the website or contact the Animal Control team for current pricing.

Will Council contact me when my tag arrives?
Yes. If a dog tag has been ordered, the Animal Control team will contact you by email when it arrives. You can then collect it from Customer Services, a Selwyn Library, or have it posted to you at no additional cost.

Please note: Tag numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If all available tags have been allocated, there may be a wait of up to one month for new tags to arrive.
