Mayoralty - (1 Vacancy)

Sam Broughton

Sam BROUGHTON

Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.
Kia ora.
I love Selwyn and I’m proud to serve as your independent Mayor.
I’ve focused on delivering real, tangible progress, better roads, upgraded water networks, and new sports and community facilities delivered on time, on budget, and without losing sight of what makes Selwyn special.
I’ve always believed my job is to give you a voice, listening to what matters and making council work better for our communities.
Selwyn is thriving. We’ve kept housing affordable, backed local jobs, and helped 2,000 new businesses launch in just 3,000 days.
I don’t like rate rises any more than you do, but after years of inflation and under investment, increases were unavoidable. I am committed to future rates rises being below 7%.
With 8 out of 10 Councillors stepping down, now is the time for proven mayoral leadership.
I am ready to keep delivering success for Selwyn, and appreciate your vote.
Sam

Kia ora.

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.
I’m standing for Mayor because Selwyn deserves leadership that listens, empowers, and delivers. I believe in working alongside our community to strengthen trust and transparency in council decision making. When people are heard and processes are open, we all benefit.
My background in business and agriculture gives me a grounded perspective, and my time on Council has proven my commitment to Selwyn. I’ve served on the front lines of community conversations and understand the pressures our residents face. I’m committed to putting people first.
Selwyn is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes responsibility. We must ensure growth pays for growth, rates are fair, and community voices are genuinely valued, not just when convenient.
I want to see councillors empowered to do their jobs, budgets properly scrutinised, and the public involved every step of the way. I’ll bring back principled, people first leadership that restores trust in local government.

Brad Mannering

Brad MANNERING

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.
Canterbury has always been home, not just for me but for generations of my family. I’ve lived, worked, and built relationships across Selwyn, and I believe it’s time we focused more on what connects us than what divides us. I’m a local small business owner who has spent my life in practical, hands-on roles. I don’t lead from behind a desk. I listen, I work, and I stay solution focused. That’s the kind of leadership I want to bring to council. I’m standing because trust in local government has taken a hit. People feel unheard, and that needs to change. We need leadership that reflects the communities it serves. My goal is to rebuild that trust, bring spending and rates under control, and plan for Selwyn’s future, including the next generation. Every step of the way, I’ll be asking one thing: How can I help?

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area. I am also standing for Tawera Community Subdivision.
A retired engineer, I bring practical experience and a strong commitment to rural and urban communities. I’m an active member of the Arthur’s Pass Residents Association, Wildlife Trust, and Community Response Team. I’ve worked closely with SDC to upgrade Arthur’s Pass’ drinking water supply.
My skills in 3 Waters will assist in the oversight of the WSC-CO.
I support initiatives to achieve Energy efficiency and Sustainability.
Raised on a mixed family farm in Methven, I understand the importance of balancing development and protecting productive farmland. The use of Groundwater and stored Irrigation schemes for production of food are important.
The current rate increases are unsustainable, new funding methods need exploring.
Being on the Selwyn District Council will give me the opportunity to engage with and ensure the needs of people in the District are heard and addressed.
I will work to ensure people in all our communities have a voice.

Tracey Macleod

Tracey MACLEOD

Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.
Selwyn’s growing fast — but so are our rates and Council spending.
I’m Tracey MacLeod, a former lawyer with courtroom experience, specialising in construction, contract, and employment law. I’ve helped national, regional, and local sports organisations, clubs, and not-for-profits fix systems, cut waste, and stretch tight budgets — often for reduced fees or none at all.
I’ve taught law and ethics, stood up to one of New Zealand’s biggest councils as a leaky-home advocate, and supported people and groups who needed someone in their corner.
I live here, I care, and I know how to ask tough questions and get results.
Council must focus on the basics: real priorities, credible budgets, and respect for ratepayers — whether you’re in Rolleston, a small town, or on the land.
I’ll bring full-time commitment, honest scrutiny, and practical leadership — and I’ll work hard for you every day.

Stop the spend, start the mend

Stop the spend, start the mend
My principal place of residence is in the Selwyn District Council area.
I’m a proud father of 3 boys, a local business owner and have lived in Selwyn all my life.
I’ve seen Selwyn change in the past 10 years from sprawling paddocks to a bustling community, this hasn’t happened without growing pains.
As your elected Councillor for At large, I will rein in spending, cut the fluff so rates can be affordable for everyone, old and young.
I’ve run for council at large because I wish to see the divide between Rural and Urban, Rich and Poor, young and old closed!
We need to refocus on core services, reduce council borrowing and deliver the services we need to deliver.
For too long the people of Selwyn have been used to fund change and growth, many residents I’ve spoken to are at breaking point.
If we have to tighten our belts, then so should council!
Stop the spend and start the mend!

Tawera Malvern Ward - (1 Vacancy)

Sharn Nu'u

Sharn NU'U

My principal place of residence is in the Tawera Malvern Ward area.
With a background in analytics, corporate strategy, and project delivery, I bring a clear, pragmatic lens to local government. I currently serve on the Malvern Community Board, and until recently was a trustee of a youth trust. I have a proven record of engaging with our community through schools, sports, youth and cultural initiatives.
I’m proud to call Malvern home — raising a family here and contributing through voluntary roles that reflect my deep commitment to this place and its people. My professional skill set complements my grassroots involvement, giving me the tools to assess issues thoughtfully and act decisively.
I’m standing for Council to offer strong local leadership — someone who understands both the numbers and the human impact behind every decision. Malvern needs a voice that’s informed, accessible, and ready to lead.
Vote Sharn Nu’u – A strong advocate for Malvern. Committed to community. Focused on what matters.

John Verry

John VERRY

My principal place of residence is in the Tawera Malvern Ward area.
As Deputy Chair of the Malvern Community Board, I’ve listened to residents and advocated for our communities. With qualifications in Law, Education, and Environmental Management, and experience managing council legal departments, I understand how council decisions affect ratepayers.
I’ll bring practical, independent leadership to the Council: focusing on stopping wasteful spending, ensuring developers pay their fair share, and keeping rates affordable. I support local representation, better engagement with our rural towns and communities, and a fair say for all.
I opposed the flawed Water Services Council Controlled Organisation proposal and will work for transparent, accountable governance that delivers real value for ratepayers. I will listen and raise community concerns. I stand for transparent, accountable governance and a Council that delivers for the people in Tawera Malvern and the Selwyn District.
Let’s make good decisions and put our communities first.

Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward - (3 Vacancies)

Avi Aulakh

Avi AULAKH

My principal place of residence is in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area.
I am running for Councillor because young people, renters, and everyday residents deserve more than to be left on the sidelines. Nearly 45% of Rolleston is under 35, yet we have zero youth voices on council. I’m 18, but I’ve already clocked over 500 hours of volunteering, from running free Bhangra dance fitness classes to co-leading cultural and youth events that build community from the ground up.
I’m not here to tick boxes or make vague promises. I’m here because I live what I stand for, that being real representation, smart spending, improving public transport, and a council that listens before it acts.
Rolleston is growing fast. We need leadership that reflects who we are now, a younger, more diverse, and ready for the future. If you want fresh ideas, action, and someone who actually shows up, I’m ready and committed.
Let’s build a Rolleston we believe in together.

Healthy Water – with my experience delivering infrastructure within the water sector for the last 20 years. I will be advocating to return Selwyn water to an unchlorinated supply and ensuring we have enough quantity, quality, and safe water across the district.
Affordable Rates – with my skills in business management, I am a firm believer in considered growth for Rolleston and the region. The cost of infrastructure and assets are to be delivered within the taxpayers means. Selwyn’s debt growth needs to be stopped.
Good Governance – I will bring a strong voice on behalf of the community and good governance to affordable rates, healthy water and infrastructure planning for Rolleston.
I am standing clear of party politics. I stand with integrity, experience and a genuine commitment to local issues, prioritising affordable rates and a return to healthy water for Selwyn.

My principal place of residence is in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area.
Hey there! So, about four years back, my partner and I rented a place in Rolleston while our new house was being built. In that time, the town has grown a lot and spread out quite a bit.
As someone who’s totally blind and uses a guide dog, I’ve seen firsthand how tough it can be for many people to navigate around our community.Like most of you, I’ve been sitting on the sidelines and commenting on decisions made by the ratepayers of the Canterbury Region. But now, I think it’s time to stand up and speak up for our community. We want a positive change, where our voices will be heard in decision-making that affects us all.
In our diverse and multi-generational community, we all need a spokesperson in council. I’d be thrilled to be able to make a positive difference on your behalf.

Hello Rolleston, I’m Ashwin Mani aka Robert, a devoted resident with a strong interest in community development. I’m standing for councillor for a safer, fairer, better Rolleston for all. I’m going to prioritise the genuine concerns of young families, families who deserve safer streets where children can be children without fear.
I will stand up for small business owners who need some real support, fewer barriers, and a council that knows how to encourage growth, not squander it. These people are the ones who keep our local economy spinning; I will make sure their voices are heard!
For our elderly residents, I will advocate for improved access to services, faster response, and policies that provide dignity and ease to their everyday lives.
Rolleston needs a voice of strength to listen and act. I will fight for what is right, because we all deserve a council that puts its people first.

As your councillor since 2019, I am an active, accessible point of contact via the residents’ association, at local events, in the community, and online. My family and I work, learn, play and volunteer in our district, and I’m always ready to discuss concerns with both respect and realism.
Over time, I’ve served as deputy chair of the Infrastructure & Transport committee and chair of Housing & Urban Development, supporting intergenerational initiatives like spatial planning, the Reconnect waste management project, and the Youth & Older Persons’ Hub.
My commitment is reinforced by a Masters in Environmental Policy & Management from Lincoln, and Institute of Directors membership. Both are deeply relevant to making tough decisions that balance today’s needs with the challenges of population growth, environmental protection, and community resilience.
In 2025-2028, I will continue to advocate for affordable, future-focused investment, and ensure that Selwyn responds effectively to government reforms.

Joe MORRIS

My principal place of residence is not in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area.
I’m standing for council because it’s time for practical leadership, accountability, and community-focused thinking to guide the decisions shaping Selwyn’s future.
With 14 years in the New Zealand Defence Force, I bring experience in leadership, planning, and working under pressure for the good of others. I’ve also worked as a local tradesman, small business owner, and like many of you, I’m a ratepayer. I know how rising costs and council decisions affect our homes, families, and livelihoods.
Our community needs voices who ask the hard questions, challenge wasteful spending, and push for smart, long-term investment in infrastructure and services. That means listening to residents, not rubber-stamping staff agendas.
I’m not here to climb a political ladder. I’m here to serve the people who live, work, and raise families in Selwyn, just like I do.
If you want someone who’ll put Selwyn first, I’d be honored to have your support.

A Voice for Rolleston Families
As a Rolleston resident and a parent navigating the realities of young family life, I understand the pressures we face. The rising cost of living is making it harder for families to thrive, let alone significant long-term rates, which present a real risk to the financial stability of many.
With a professional background covering financial analysis, operational management and procurement, I'm standing to be a strong, relatable voice, and will use these skills to focus on advocating for planned and fiscally responsible decisions that deliver efficiency and value for money in every council service.
I'm committed to transparent processes, rebuilding trust, working collectively, and holding council accountable for the outcomes that matter to you. Let's build a council that truly reflects and responds to the people's needs whilst remaining affordable, ensuring our district remains a fantastic place to raise families, now and in the future.

ACT Local: Real Change. Lower Rates.

My principal place of residence is in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area.
Ratepayers are being let down by Selwyn District Council with outrageous rates hikes and wasteful spending on unnecessary projects and services. It’s time to give the Council a wakeup call and focus on the things that matter in Selwyn.
As a Selwyn local, I see first-hand the issues facing our community, and my background working with Local Government in the UK and New Zealand, and leadership in the financial sector, means I know how to deliver practical solutions that put ratepayers first.
By voting for me as an ACT Local, you know exactly what you are going to get:
I will keep rates down, cut wasteful spending, restore transparency and accountability to the decision-making process, and remove all race-based policies and services.
If you want to see common sense back around the Council table, then please give me one of your votes.
My principal place of residence is Rolleston Ward.

Paul Weggery

Paul WEGGERY

My principal place of residence is in the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward area.
The reason I’m standing for council is because of the high rates rises in this term of council.
I built a house here in Rolleston 9 years ago and my partner Lucy and I love this town. However, I’m concerned that Rolleston is becoming unaffordable for many to live. Rates rises hit those on fixed incomes and pensioners hard. I have seen residents struggling to make ends meet because of council spending.
I am a senior teacher and have degrees in Marketing, Science and English. Prior to teaching, I worked in managerial roles. Being a teacher has given me the ability to work with a wide range of people, analyse complex issues, and think critically.
My focus is making sure future developments can be paid for without hitting residents in the pocket. If we don’t need it - don’t spend money on it.

I am an Independent Candidate with no connection to any political party or political lobby groups. I have a strong work ethic and consider all matters on merit not biased by what will benefit me.

My principal place of residence is in the Te Waihora Ellesmere Ward area.
As your current Ellesmere Councillor, I have worked tirelessly to advocate for the best outcome for Selwyn residents for affordability and democracy where the ratepayers are heard when Council makes decisions.
Like many ratepayers I have been frustrated and strongly opposed to the direction Council has taken.
I voted against the WSCCO water decision, as the inhouse model was more economical for ratepayers.
I voted against the Long-Term Plan as yearly double-digit rate increases are beyond so many.
I voted to retain both rural councillors in Malvern and Ellesmere Wards, to have the rural voice around the table and fairer representation.
I will continue to be outspoken and ethical in Council. My proven voting record shows my commitment to our community.
I will focus on delivering due diligence, value for money and halting non-essential spending to limit our rising intergenerational debt.
Thank you for your vote.

Selwyn Council needs more independent thinking and accountability. I bring financial and analytical skills, experience managing a $100M budget, and training in governance and finance. I’m solutions focussed, I’ll listen to the community, and ask the necessary questions to make informed decisions.
Large, unsustainable, rates increases are being used to dig Council out of a financial hole. By 2029 debt will hit $600M (triple 2024). We must get costs under control—budgeting accurately, spending efficiently, and reconsidering nice to haves.
Selwyn's been home for 30-years, my family connection 75-years. My grandfather farmed at Broadfield, my father was in Lincoln High's first intake. My wife teaches preschool locally, I've worked at a Lincoln research centre, my children attended Springston Primary and Lincoln High, and I coached Selwyn Football for years.
Now I'm able to give back. This is why I'm standing, to serve Selwyn residents in a fair, sustainable, affordable way.

My family loves living in Prebbleton. Like most, we’ve chosen Selwyn for its community spirit and quality of life, and I want to help protect what makes it special.
My global experience living and working across eight countries has given me insight into what makes communities happy and successful.
Selwyn's extraordinary growth needs careful planning, financial transparency, and modern systems. I previously co-founded a Canterbury technology company that helps Australasian councils make financial information intuitive and accessible for everyone, earning us national recognition for improving spend clarity and boosting public engagement.
With your support, I will work to balance Selwyn's community needs, push for cost effectiveness, encourage growing businesses, supported by a more transparent, trusted council that delivers real value for you, the ratepayer.

There is also an election for a Community Board in the Malvern Ward. A total of five Community Board members will be elected, from two subdivisions:

Tawera Community Subdivision - (2 Vacancies)

Bex Lambie

Bex LAMBIE

Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Tawera Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
Having successfully operated motels in Ashburton with my husband for the last 20 years, while raising two energetic boys, I now choose to call this wonderful community home.
My background in small business has equipped me with management skills, practical decision-making, and a deep understanding of what it means to serve others. By managing staff, supporting guests from all walks of life, and problem-solving under pressure has given me valuable insights into communication, accountability, and getting things done, skills that are directly transferable to the role of a Community Board member.
I am passionate about drinkable water, food security, and rate reductions.
I am approachable, down-to-earth, and genuinely committed to ensuring local voices are heard. I am ready to work hard for positive outcomes across the Tawera Subdivision and Tawera Malvern Ward.
Committed to Community, Grounded in Experience.

My principal place of residence is in the Tawera Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area. I am also standing for Council - At Large.
A retired engineer, I bring practical experience and a strong commitment to rural communities. I’m an active member of the Arthur’s Pass Residents Association, Wildlife Trust, and Local Community Response Team. I’ve worked closely with SDC to upgrade Arthur’s Pass’ drinking water supply.
Being on the Malvern Community Board will give me the opportunity to engage with and ensure the needs of people in our rural towns and villages are heard and addressed. Raised on a mixed family farm in Methven, I understand the importance of protecting productive farmland. I support our rural communities and sustainability. The use of Groundwater and stored Irrigation schemes for production of food are important. I will work to ensure people in our rural communities have a voice.
The current rate increases are unsustainable, new funding methods need exploring.

Gareth Payne

Gary PAYNE

My principal place of residence is in the Tawera Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
About Me. Completed a degree in Forestry Science at Canterbury University in 2002. Served l0ys in the British Army as a Military Surveyor/ Engineer and spent l0ys in Engineering consultancy when moving to Canterbury in 2011. Currently work self employed across a number of sectors including tourism, forestry, agriculture and digital mapping services.
I have become very concerned about the running of Selwyn District Council, namely the lack of transparency and accountability of elected representatives and senior council staff. This has lead to excessive wasteful spending and unsustainable debt loads held against community assets and rates.
I will look to ensure local communities are aware of key council decisions and submissions, look to coordinate responses from the community and advocate for community interests with the council.

Hawkins Community Subdivision - (3 Vacancies)

Erin Brodie

Erin BRODIE

Independent

My principal place of residence is in the Hawkins Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
If elected to the Malvern Community Board my commitment will be to fight for those without a voice, to stand on the street and meet you where you live and work and where you hold your dreams. If needed I will be that lone voice and will not give up asking the tough questions. So who am I? At 63yrs I'm a retired Social Worker, mother of five, dog lover, chook owner and 'sheep whisperer'. A member of the Darfield Residents Association, the Malvern Writers Cafe and the Sheffield Book Club. Like you I call this community 'home' and although we may not always see eye to eye I will take your voice to the Board and Council table and work tirelessly for honest, transparent and accountable outcomes. With your vote we may not always win but together we will not be ignored, forgotten or left behind.

Evan Frew

Evan FREW

My principal place of residence is in the Hawkins Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
I grew up in Darfield and went to school here. On leaving school I started work at Frews Transport where I stayed for the next 40 years progressing from office boy to CEO.
My Local Body experience includes:
Malvern County Councillor for 12 years with 2 as Deputy Mayor; Selwyn District Councillor and Finance chair for 6 years; Director of several Council-owned businesses including Sicon; Acted for Council for first Izone land purchase.
My Aims:
I believe that the ratepayers of SDC have to be governed by a more democratic model. This can be achieved, in our community, by the SDC giving the Malvern Community Board broad and clearly delegated responsibilities.
I believe rate increases must align with the rate of inflation. If this is not possible then Council must reduce its service and costs to achieve this goal.

My principal place of residence is in the Hawkins Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
I’m a new Pensioner, but have enjoyed running successful small businesses for the past 38 years. Married for 40 years, we’ve enjoyed being residents of Darfield for the past 27 of them.
In that period I made time to attend Lincoln University, gaining my Masters Degree through their part-time courses.
Passionate about Aviation, I was elected to the Council of the Aviation Industry Association of New Zealand, serving on that body from 1997 – 2013, focussing my efforts on developing a coherent Export Strategy for the industry in New Zealand. My mantra in business has always been to Buy Local where I can, spend money responsibly , and avoid waste while delivering first class service to our clients, both locally and in our export markets.
In this regard I believe I can offer solid experience and pragmatism to the people of Tawera Malvern, who I would be honoured to serve.

Gideon Pieters

Gideon PIETERS

My principal place of residence is in the Hawkins Subdivision of the Malvern Community Board area.
Growing up in a rural community like Darfield, and having lived in Christchurch for 29 years, made me realise how much alike rural communities are. Moving into the Selwyn District had a feel of going home. As an import to New Zealand, this country has offered me much, and it is time for me to offer something back. I spend my life in the software industry, working internationally and exclusively focused on manufacturing and construction businesses. The skills you build up in working with different industries and different cultures are largely transferable. Serving the Malvern ward, will be based on building environments that are focused on principles of self-governance, liberty and stewardship. Having done some coaching and mentoring, I do believe that most people know what needs to be done or worked on. My job will be assist and facilitate that within the parameters set for our ward..

Kia ora! I am a proud Cantabrian, raised in Christchurch, graduated from the University of Canterbury in Engineering, and live in Kirwee.
For over 20 years, I’ve worked in the food, petroleum, and dairy industries of New Zealand.
The fresh perspective I’ll bring to council comes from the passion I have for our community and for turning concerns into action that improves the community’s wellbeing.
We are fortunate to live in a rich, natural environment; however, we need to protect our natural capital and work together for a more sustainable future.
My professional background and education will inform how I support our community to address difficult challenges like climate change that will affect future generations.
The breadth of my professional experience has equipped me with the skills necessary to work collaboratively to voice residents’ concerns at council, to be a strong voice for our community, and to seek positive outcomes.
