Voting opens on 9 September. You should receive your voting papers by 22 September.
Choose your Council by 12 midday Saturday 11 October.

Local elections will be held for:
1 Mayor
1 councillor to represent the Te Waihora Ellesmere Ward
1 councillor to represent the Tawera Malvern Ward
3 councillors to represent the Kā Mānia Rolleston Ward
3 councillors to represent the Kā Puna Springs Ward
2 councillors to represent the District at large.
5 members to represent the Malvern Community Board, made up of the following representatives:
- 3 members to represent the Hawkins Community subdivision
- 2 members to represent the Tawera Community subdivision.
Environment Canterbury (ECan) will also carry out an election process for 2 councillors to represent the Mid- Canterbury/Ōpakihi Constituency (comprising the areas bounded by the Ashburton and Selwyn District Councils). ECan will release information covering that election process.
Confirmed candidates
Nominations for candidates for the local body elections closed at 12 noon on Friday 1 August. We received 41 nominations, and all positions will be contested.

Representation Review
In April we received the final local government commission (LGC) determination for our representation review. View the LGC determination notifying the final arrangements for representation for the 2025 local elections.
The key dates for the 2025 elections are:
- From 1 April: Elections will be advertised
- 4 July: Nominations open
- 1 August: Nominations close at midday
- 9 September: Voter packs mailed to electors. Voting opens.
- 11 October: Voting closes at midday. Progress results ASAP thereafter
- By 16 October 2025: Official results released
- From 16 October: Official results advertised.
- By 19 December: Candidate campaign expense and donation declarations due
Information for enrolled voters
If you are enrolled as a parliamentary elector, you will automatically be placed on the Council’s electoral roll as a residential elector. If you need to enrol or update existing name or address details on the parliamentary electoral roll, you can do so at online at vote.nz or by phoning 0800 36 76 56.
If you pay rates on property within the council area but live outside that area, you may be eligible to enrol as a ratepayer elector. A copy of the ratepayer enrolment form can be downloaded here.
