Community Research for Selwyn's Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan
Selwyn District Council will be consulting on its Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan this September.
Ahead of consultation, we've engaged an independent third-party research provider to carry out community research. During August and September, some households may be contacted and invited to take part in the study.
Gathering early community feedback will help us better understand what matters most to residents and use these insights to shape the consultation and development of the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
I've been contacted by a research company. Are they legitimate?
Yes, Selwyn District Council have appointed a third-party research company to recruit participants for focus group research and telephone-based surveys relating to the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.
Why have I been contacted by a research company?
Selwyn District Council has engaged an independent research provider to support community research on the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. Some households may be contacted during August and September and invited to take part. Council has advised the community through the Selwyn Times on 6 and 13 August and 10 September, social media and community pages.
What is the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan?
The Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) is a six-yearly plan required by law that sets the strategic direction for how waste will be reduced, reused, recycled, and managed across the district. It establishes goals and actions to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and improve resource recovery.
Why is Council reviewing waste services?
The Waste Management and Minimisation Plan must be reviewed every six years under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008. The review helps ensure our waste services continue to meet the needs of our growing district while reducing waste sent to landfill and improving resource recovery.
Is Council changing our rubbish and recycling collection?
Selwyn District Council is currently reviewing the future of waste services as part of developing a new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. No decisions have been made. A draft plan will be released for public consultation in September, and the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback before any decisions are made.
Does taking part in the research mean Council has already decided to change waste services?
No. The research is part of the information-gathering process, and no decisions have been made. Community feedback during the formal consultation will help shape the final Waste Management and Minimisation Plan. This research stage is intended to provide insights that support a robust and effective consultation process.
What happens with my personal information?
Personal information collected as part of the research will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020 and the requirements of the research project.
The research provider is required to handle information appropriately and may only use it for the purposes of the research project, subject to the terms of its agreement with Council and applicable privacy requirements.
I didn't give permission for my personal information to be shared with a researcher or third party.
Under the Privacy Act, personal information can only be used or shared when there is a lawful reason to do so. The Privacy Act allows information to be used or disclosed for purposes that are directly related to the reason it was originally collected, including research that helps Council plan and improve those services.
In this case, the research is directly related to Council's waste management services and future planning.
Any research is carried out on Council's behalf by an independent research provider under strict privacy and confidentiality requirements. Information gathered through the research is used for research purposes only, and findings are reported in a way that does not identify individual participants.
Participation in the research is completely voluntary. If you are contacted, you can choose whether or not you would like to take part.
The findings will inform the consultation process and help ensure the information provided during consultation addresses the issues that matter most to residents. Undertaking this research will also help Council present information and design consultation questions in a way that is meaningful, easy to understand and relevant to the community, enabling residents to provide informed feedback.
When can I have my say on the draft plan?
Formal public consultation on the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan will open in mid-September. At that time, residents will be able to review the draft plan and provide feedback through the Your Say section of the Selwyn District Council website.

Can I be part of the research?
