Information on how to safely manage and dispose of farm waste to protect land, water, and health.

Running a farm generates a wide range of waste, including bale wrap and chemical containers. How farm waste is managed can make a big difference to the health of the air, land, waterways, and those living and working on the farm. Responsible disposal helps protect soil and water quality, reduces pollution, and supports a more sustainable rural environment.

The Dangers of Burning Farm Plastics

Burning farm plastics such as bale wrap, old containers, drums, or tyres can release harmful air pollutants and toxic by-products like heavy metals and dioxins. These substances pose health risks and can contaminate soil, waterways, and even food or water sources on your property.

The smoke from burning plastics is often dark or black, which can be a clear sign that the fire includes materials that shouldn’t be burned.

Minimising Contamination from Pits

Rubbish or offal pits should only be used for appropriate materials. Placing plastic, treated timber, or other non-organic waste into pits can lead to harmful contaminants leaching into the ground, which may affect the quality of bore water or harm the surrounding environment.

For non-recyclable farm plastics, it’s best to take them to the Pines Resource Recovery Park, or any other nearby transfer station rather than burning or burying them. While using farm pits is allowed if certain conditions are met, considering other disposal options can help avoid potential issues on your farm down the track.
