Update: Due to recent weather conditions, this work has been delayed. Work will now start on 14 July and is expected to be completed by the end of August

The road will be closed from 9.00am on Tuesday 14 July and reopen at 5.30pm on Friday 21 August (weather permitting)

Leeston Road flood culvert installation

A box culvert is being installed to reduce the risk of flooding, while avoiding impacts to locations alreadyprone to flooding. The new box culvert will be 2.5 metres wide, 1 metre deep, and 12 metres long, with new headwalls and wingwalls also being installed.

Options were considered to maintain traffic flow during construction, including the use of temporary traffic lights. However, given the size of the excavation required and the width of the existing road, there is not enough room to safely accommodate this. The photos below show a similar sized culvert recently installed which demonstrate the scale of work to be undertaken.

Work will take place from around 7:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday, with some work outside these hours. Weather and unforeseen site conditions may affect these times.

Please note: Favourable weather conditions may allow work to be completed quicker allowing the road to partially reopen to one lane earlier.
