Boil Water Notice

There are no Boil Water Notices currently in place.

When a Boil Water Notice is communicated to water users:

Boil Water Before:

- Drinking
- Brushing teeth
- Preparing food
- Making ice

Bringing water to the boil is sufficient to kill all bugs (water does not require prolonged boiling). Even if water smells or tastes like chlorine, it must still be boiled.

Boiling Water:

- Boil the water in an electric jug until the jugs turns off automatically
- Or bring the water to a rolling boil (where bubbles appear in the centre and do not disappear when the water is stirred) for one minute
- Store cooled water in a clean container with a lid
- Boiled water is best used within 24 hours and can be boiled again to be sure it is safe. This is especially important for preparing infant formula

If boiling isn't possible - add 1/2 teaspoon of household bleach per 10L of water, wait 30 minutes before use. For more information visit: http://taumataarowai.govt.nz/.../emergencies/treating-water/ .

You will need to continue to boil your water until you are notified that the Boil Water Notice has been lifted. It is likely to be in place for several days. The Council will continue to test the water supply over the weekend, and keep residents informed of any updates.

Water Shutdowns

During a water shutdown, our contractor may not have time to door-knock as their focus is on restoring the water supply as soon as possible. The below easy-to-use map provides real-time updates on both planned and unplanned outages. To find relevant details:

  • Click and drag to move around the map
  • Scroll to zoom into an area of Selwyn
  • Click on an outage area for more information such as affected areas, estimated duration, and (when known) the cause.

Please note, that if the Map is not displaying any details - this means that there are no current or upcoming outages. To refresh the map, please reload the page.

WHEN THE WATER IS SWITCHED BACK ON

We encourage you to flush your taps by running them for a few moments, starting with any outside taps.  When water is shut off, air bubbles can become trapped in the pipes.  When the water is turned back on, and the air is pushed out under pressure, it can dislodge rust or scale from the pipe walls.

Flushing your outside taps prevents this being drawn into the taps inside your home. If you run a business that requires constant water service, you will need to organise your own water storage as necessary.  If you have a sprinkler system, we recommend you inform your insurance company of this shutdown.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we carry out these works to upgrade your water network and keep it in good working order.
