Run! Back yourself. Run for Council.
Anyone who’s thought about taking a stand and running for Council in the 2025 Local Body Elections, can find out more at an upcoming candidate information session.
Selwyn District Council will be holding five candidate information sessions between 26 May and 30 June around the Selwyn district for prospective candidates in this year’s local body elections.
“Our upcoming candidate information sessions are an opportunity for anyone who’s interested in standing in the 2025 elections to learn more about what is involved in being an elected member. The sessions will cover the nomination and election processes, and the roles of council and elected members,” says Sharon Mason, Chief Executive, who will also lead the workshops.
Candidate information sessions will be held from 6.30-7.30pm at the following dates and locations:
- Monday 26 May – Lincoln Event Centre
- Tuesday 3 June – Doyleston Hall
- Thursday 5 June – Rolleston Council offices – Norman Kirk Drive
- Thursday 10 June – Darfield Library and Service Centre
An online session with the Electoral Officer will be held at 6.30-7.30pm on Monday 30 June.
“We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to take a stand,” Ms Mason says. “With the pace at which Waikirikiri Selwyn is growing, this is an opportunity for anyone who’s passionate about the community and district to stand up and run for Council. With a diverse community we need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.”
Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen, enrolled on the Selwyn electoral roll and are nominated by two people over the age of 18 who are also enrolled to vote in the area the candidate is planning to stand.
In the 2025 local elections 8 councillors will be elected four wards - Te Waihora Ellesmere (1), Tawera Malvern (1), Kā Mānia Rolleston (3), and Kā Puna Springs (3). For the first time, Waikirikiri Selwyn residents will also vote for 2 councillors at-large (across the entire district.)
Five community board members will be elected to the Malvern Community Board, in two subdivisions – Hawkins (3), and Tawera (2).
The mayor is elected ‘at large’ across the district.
The election is held by postal voting which opens on Tuesday 9 September and closes at midday on Saturday 11 October.
Nominations for candidates for the available positions will open on Friday 4 July and close at 12 noon on 1 August.
In the meantime, everyone over the age of 18 and living in Waikirikiri Selwyn District is encouraged to make sure they are enrolled to be able to vote and that their contact details are up-to-date.
