A great way to meet your new neighbours

New to Leeston, Hayden and his family decided that the best way to meet their neighbours would be to host a summer barbecue and invite the nearby families.

This kid-friendly event took place on 9 January from 11am to 6pm, attracting over 20 neighbours.

Hayden said with the recent cost of living, the Council's Meet Your Street fund helped make the event happen as he did not have to worry about how he was going to afford it.

The fund was able to pay for all the food, non-alcoholic drinks and items needed for a BBQ event of 20 people.

“It meant a lot to us to be able to make this event a success. I would recommend applying for this fund because it’s a great way to meet the neighbourhood, especially if you have just moved into the area. I think more families should utilise this awesome opportunity.”

From now until the end of March, communities across Aotearoa are coming together in all sorts of ways for Neighbours Aotearoa 2025. It’s about connecting with the people around us, in whatever way makes sense for your neighbourhood.
