Steve officially begins in his role today. He has been acting in the role since January, providing continuity and stability during a significant period for the organisation as it works through government reform, the Annual Plan, and several key community issues.

Mayor Lydia Gliddon said the appointment followed a robust recruitment process and reflected Council’s strong confidence in Steve’s leadership.

“We had a high calibre of candidates for this role and went through a thorough and robust process. In the end, we know we’ve appointed the right person for Selwyn,” she said. “We’ve had the benefit of seeing Steve lead the organisation over the past seven months, and he has shown strong, steady leadership through a period of change.

“He brings a deep understanding of our district, a clear strategic focus, and a genuine commitment to our communities. Importantly, he has built trust with our staff and councillors and has demonstrated a strong people-first approach to leadership. “Affordability remains a key priority for our community, and we need leadership that keeps that front of mind while still delivering essential services and planning for growth. Steve understands that balance.” He has also shown a clear commitment to building an organisation that is efficient, adaptable, and fit for purpose, not just for today's challenges, but for the needs of Selwyn over the next decade and beyond.

Mayor Gliddon said his handling of complex issues, including work to rebuild trust with Upper Selwyn Huts residents, highlighted his ability to balance community connection with Council’s responsibilities. “We are looking forward to working with Steve as we continue to shape a clear, forward-looking direction for Selwyn and get on with the work that matters for our communities.”

Steve Gibling said he was proud to take on the role permanently. “I’m really pleased to be stepping into this role and continuing to work alongside our staff, elected members and community,” he said. “This is a district I feel strongly connected to - my kids live here, play sport here, and I see first-hand what makes this place special and what matters to our communities.”

“My focus is on building on the work already underway, continuing to support our people, strengthening our partnerships with mana whenua, and working alongside our communities as we shape what comes next for Selwyn.” He said the next period would be critical for local government.

"We’re in the middle of what is likely the biggest reform of local government since the 1980s. That brings uncertainty, but also a real opportunity to shape how we deliver for our communities into the future.”

Steve also talked about how important it is to bring our people along on the journey.

"With more than 600 staff across the district, from libraries and campgrounds to parks, reserves and head office, it’s these teams who show up every day to keep our facilities open, our spaces maintained, and services running for the community."

The past seven months have also reinforced the importance of strong relationships and clear direction, he said.

“We’ve got some big pieces of work ahead of us, including our long-term planning and ongoing reform conversations. It’s important we bring our communities with us, listen well, and make sure the decisions we take reflect what matters most to them.”

Steve brings more than 25 years’ leadership experience across local government, not-for-profit and tertiary sectors, and has a strong background in community-focused services and organisational leadership.
