Fresh data from Infometrics reveals that the Selwyn district's economy continues to grow despite the nationwide economic downturn.

The data covering the year up to March 2025 shows that Selwyn has seen growth in employment, tourism, consumer spend, and new businesses.

Mayor Sam Broughton says that the rapid growth in recent years has slowed down, but Selwyn's economy remains strong. "Many households and businesses are finding things tough, so we are pleased to see that the Selwyn economy and job creation continues to rise."

Selwyn bucks the national trend in many categories, with employment rising 4.2% compared to a nationwide reduction of -0.9%, the jobseeker numbers in the district are at 2% compared to the national average of 6%. Consumer spending increased by 3.1% compared to -1.4% nationwide, and Selwyn's GDP grew by 0.8% compared to -1.1% nationally.

The Infometrics data shows the robust nature of the Selwyn economy and predicts an additional boost from the rural sector, with lamb and beef prices up 10% and 15% respectively, as well as record-high dairy prices.

"Farming success in Selwyn provides a platform for ongoing success in other industries so it's encouraging to see this uptick in prices.”

There is also an 18% increase in international visitor spending in the past year, much higher than the national average increase of 7.7%.

"Destination management is increasingly important and one of the key priorities in our Economic Development Strategy. The Council is working to see more value in the district from visitors, not just an increase in visitor numbers." says Broughton.
