Council investing in essential infrastructure
Infrastructure work agreed with the community for Selwyn has been progressing well, with the focus on essential infrastructure.
Newly released figures for the year to November 2024 showed 86% of the Council’s capital spend was on water and roads, with 56% of spending on five waters infrastructure and 30% of spending on roading infrastructure.
During consultation on the Long-Term Plan Selwyn communities were clear they wanted to see investment in infrastructure. The Council agreed to spend 82% of capital expenditure in water and roads over the 10 years of the Long-Term Plan. This included $181 million of projects across the district in the 24/25 financial year, the first year of the Long-Term Plan.
Council Executive Director of Infrastructure and Property Tim Mason says his team is focused on delivering on key needs for the community.
“We know from our community that infrastructure, particularly water and roads are key areas where they wanted to see investment. We are working hard to deliver on that and the team has done really well so far.”
This included an increased budget for road maintenance particularly road resealing, with more than 60km of road resealed by the end of the year, well on track for the goal of resealing 75km of road by the end of April.
Construction on the Ellesmere to Pines Wastewater Pipeline and the extension of the Darfield water and wastewater infrastructure to developments are running ahead of schedule. While the Council has also completed refurbishment of Southbridge Pool and Castle Hill Community Hall, and construction of Trices Road and Tosswill Road Intersection upgrade, widening of Weedons Ross Road, construction of the Broadlands Drive park and ride and the Shands Road roundabouts at the Hamptons Road and Trents Road intersections.
The safety upgrade of the Levi Lowes Masefield Lincoln Rolleston intersection safety upgrade is underway along with the youth zone at Foster Park and the first stages of the Lincoln Town Centre upgrade. New water infrastructure for Prebbleton and West Melton, the safety upgrade of the Goulds Road Ellesmere Junction Road intersection and the widening of Two Chain Road and Ellesmere Road are also on the way.
