Council launches new webpage on local government reforms

The Council has today launched a dedicated webpage to help residents stay informed about the Government’s proposed reforms to local government.
Mayor Lydia Gliddon says the new hub is designed to give Selwyn residents clear, accessible information as the national conversation progresses.
“As Mayor, I want to assure you that Selwyn District Council is committed to calm, steady decision-making as we navigate these changes – we will share what we know, when we know it. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make local government work better for all of Canterbury. Let’s work together, have our say, and make sure we get this right for Selwyn.”
The Council will use the page to update the community on key reform areas now underway or signalled by central government, including:
- Rates capping
- Proposed legislation for development levies
- Resource Management Act reform
- The Government’s Simplifying Local Government initiative
- Emergency Management Bill
- Building system reform
- Public Works Act
Mayor Gliddon says these changes have the potential to shape the future of how councils operate, and how services are funded.
“We’re committed to keeping rates as low as possible while ensuring the services our community depends on remain strong. How these reforms interact, and the roles of central and local government, are still being shaped.”
She says the Council will continue advocating strongly for Selwyn throughout the reform process.
“We look forward to working closely with our neighbouring Councils and central government as we gather your feedback and advocate clearly for Selwyn.”
The new webpage will be regularly updated as information becomes available, including reform timelines, access to the Council’s submissions, links for further information and options for individuals to make submissions.
“These reforms are like a complex puzzle, each piece affects another, and the full picture is still being formed. Our job is to assess the information, make our submissions and make sure Selwyn’s interests are represented as the pieces come together.”
